Punjab government has finalized important details of the CM Electric Bike Scheme, making it easier than ever for students to obtain electric bikes.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has approved the provision of more than 125,000 electric bikes under the scheme. A proposal to require a down payment from students has also been rejected.
Under the scheme, students will only have to pay monthly installments. Officials have proposed an installment of around Rs. 3,000 per month, while the Punjab government will bear the interest and insurance costs on the bikes.
The government has also focused on the bikes’ safety features. Selected students will be provided free helmets and safety rods, while the electric bikes will use Lithium Iron Phosphate, or LFP, batteries.
Driving training is also being arranged for students. It has been decided to provide two days of free e-bike driving training to applicants interested in the scheme.
Punjab government directed the e-bike portal to open in the first week of September and instructed authorities to expedite the delivery of bikes to eligible students.
The scope of the scheme will not be limited to students. There are plans to include government employees, departments, and delivery workers in the program as well.
Punjab’s e-bike program is part of the province’s wider green transport plans. The focus of this initiative is to promote electric vehicles and provide affordable transport options for students and other eligible users. Punjab Transport Department documents also describe the e-bike scheme as a sustainable urban mobility initiative.
