How to Prepare for a Job Interview

Good interview preparation is not about memorising perfect sentences. It is about knowing your experience well enough to explain it clearly. Start by reading the job description, identifying the main skills the employer needs and preparing honest examples that show how you used those skills.

Before the Interview

  1. Read the job description and note the main duties and required skills.
  2. Research the employer, its work and the position you applied for.
  3. Prepare a short introduction that connects your background with the role.
  4. Choose examples of achievements, difficult situations and teamwork.
  5. Check the interview time, location or video meeting details in advance.

Use the STAR Method for Experience Questions

STAR stands for Situation, Task, Action and Result. Briefly explain the background, describe your responsibility, focus on the action you personally took and finish with the outcome. Use numbers when they are accurate and relevant, but never invent a result.

Practice tip: Say each answer aloud after writing the key points. Spoken practice helps you notice long explanations, vague claims and details that are difficult to remember.

What to Take to an Interview

  • Extra copies of your updated CV.
  • A copy of the job advertisement or job description.
  • Required certificates, identification or portfolio items.
  • A pen and a small notebook.
  • Two or three useful questions to ask the interviewer.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long should an interview answer be?

Most answers can be clear within one or two minutes. A detailed experience question may take longer, but keep the answer focused on information that supports the job.

How should I answer Tell me about yourself?

Give a short professional summary. Mention your current situation, relevant experience or education, useful skills and why the target role makes sense as your next step.

What if I do not have work experience?

Use examples from education, internships, volunteering, personal projects or responsibilities. Focus on the skill you used and the result, not only where the experience happened.

Should I memorise my interview answers?

Memorise key points rather than complete sentences. Fully memorised answers can sound unnatural and may become difficult to adjust when the question is phrased differently.

How do I answer a question about weakness?

Choose a genuine weakness that does not make you unsuitable for the main duty. Explain what you are doing to improve and give evidence of recent progress.

What questions can I ask the interviewer?

Ask about the role's priorities, the team, how performance is measured, the expected first few months and the next stage of the hiring process.

Does this tool send my answers to the server?

No. The practice session runs in your browser. The save option uses local storage on your current device and does not upload your notes to the website server.

Can this tool guarantee that I will get the job?

No. It can help you organise and practise answers, but hiring decisions depend on the employer, the role, your experience and the actual interview.
