Higher Education Commission HEC has opened registration for the Law Admission Test (LAT), giving prospective law students until October 20 to apply.
The test is tentatively scheduled for November 15.
Applications are being accepted through the Education Testing Council portal at etc.hec.gov.pk. HEC’s current registration window runs from October 4 to October 20.
LAT is an admission requirement for undergraduate law study in Pakistan. Under HEC’s revised LLB curriculum, candidates need a score of at least 50 percent in the test, along with the required academic qualification.
Students who have completed intermediate education can register for this round. Those awaiting their final examination results are also allowed to apply, according to the registration notice reported by ProPakistani.
Students awaiting results can apply
The notification includes candidates who have passed the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) or an equivalent qualification with 12 years of education. It also allows students to register who have passed their final HSSC (or equivalent) exams but may not have received their results.
Candidates who have passed LAT before can appear for the LAT again for getting better marks for merit based admission.
Eligibility for taking the test and eligibility for a place at a university must be verified separately. The revised curriculum requires a minimum of 45 percent marks in HSSC, A levels or equivalent course recognised by the Inter Boards Coordination Commission for entry into LLB programme.
The curriculum provides for a 4-year degree with at least 8 regular semesters. Students should check the admission notice of their chosen university or college for its application process and deadlines.
Registration must be submitted
Applicants need to complete their profile and formally submit the LAT application through the ETC portal. A form left saved or incomplete will not be considered, ProPakistani reported, citing the notice.
HEC has instructed candidates to check their personal information before submission, including their name, identity number and mobile number. Registration must be completed using the applicant’s own details.
Candidates should also enter an email address they regularly check. Test information will be communicated through the registered contact details, making access to that email account and phone number necessary throughout the process.
The submission status is worth checking before leaving the portal. An applicant may have entered all the required information but still need to complete the final submission step.
LAT includes a written paper
The examination carries 100 marks. HEC’s published test pattern allocates 75 marks to multiple choice questions and 25 to an essay and a personal statement.
English and general knowledge have the largest shares of the objective paper, carrying 20 marks each. Pakistan Studies, Islamic Studies and Urdu account for 10 marks each, while mathematics carries five.
Candidates have 100 minutes to complete the 75 multiple choice questions.
The written section follows a separate allocation of 40 minutes. It includes an essay worth 15 marks and a personal statement worth 10. Both can be written in English or Urdu.
The essay and personal statement together account for a quarter of the paper. Students preparing for LAT will therefore need to practise written responses alongside the objective subjects.
A score of 50 out of 100 meets the LAT requirement specified in HEC’s revised LLB curriculum. Applicants must still meet the academic requirements and complete the admission process of the institution they intend to join.
Roll number slips scheduled for November 6
HEC’s latest examination calendar lists November 6 for the release of LAT roll number slips. The test is tentatively set for November 15, with results scheduled for December 24.
Applicants should follow ETC announcements for any changes to these dates and read the examination instructions issued with their slips.
The immediate deadline is October 20, when the current registration window closes.
